Thursday 9 October | 4pm-6pm | Online via Zoom

About the Session:
Scotland’s cultural identity is shared. Our musical output has long been celebrated across the world, but how do we ensure it accurately reflects the diverse soundtrack and stories of our lives? This panel explores the intersections of culture, policy, commercial music and soft power, asking how we can export the strength and diversity of Scottish music for maximum impact and benefit, and how our music industry can better connect with the rest of the world.
With growing conversations around contemporary cultural identity, environmental sustainability and national strategy, the panel will consider how Scotland should develop its own music export infrastructure. What would a distinctly Scottish model look like? Can we develop export activities that lead to both economic innovation and increased cultural confidence? And how do we align music with tourism, tech and environmental responsibilities?
From genre-specific barriers to the risk of Scottish stereotypes, the conversation unpacks the challenges of branding, resourcing and defining Scottishness in a modern, global context. What does it mean to build a music export strategy that reflects the full diversity of Scotland – past, present and future?
