Anti-racism & cultural proficiency training from Intercultural Youth Scotland

Intercultural Youth Scotland (IYS) is now offering free anti-racism & cultural proficiency training for groups, organisations and individuals seeking to collapse barriers that might be in place for Young Black people.

Intercultural Youth Scotland (IYS) is Scotland’s leading charity for Black and People of Colour (BPoC) youth. IYS is the only major organisation that is both youth-led and Black and PoC-led and key decisions within the organisation are led by their network of Youth Ambassadors.

IYS’ unique grassroots approach, where training is developed and delivered by a diverse team of young people, and conversation-shifting research will help you better engage young people and work toward establishing a safer workplace where racism is not re-produced.

This freefull-day training is delivered over three 2/2.5hr sessions:

Session One
A Foundational session exploring how we can establish safe spaces in our workplaces and with young people; followed by a critical exploration of the language we use, implicit racisms, and how we identify Young Black and Young People of Colour such that we do not homogenise them – leading to the understanding that there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to engaging with and understanding the young people with whom we work.

Session Two
Building on the work of the first session, the second session develops our exploration of language so that we can begin thinking about power, our standpoint in society, and our relationship with white supremacist thinking. This session seeks to understand ourselves as parts of a racist society and help us begin to explore our responses to racism as individuals and collectives, as well as the values we might need to reject or take on as part of our anti-racist practice.

Session Three
Finally, our third session will draw from the testimony of Young Black people and Young People of Colour in Scotland to explore the barriers they might have faced in their lives and let us think about ways in which we might avoid, collapse, or deconstruct similar barriers in our workplace. This session seeks to give participants an initial experience of thinking critically against racism in a practical sense.
