Cumnock backed to be global hub for new music composers and teachers

The composer behind Cumnock’s Tryst music festival has revealed plans to create a centre for excellence for the learning and teaching of classical music composition in the town.

Sir James MacMillan said teaching already pioneered in the area’s schools could become a template for music tuition throughout Scotland and beyond.

The composer is a behind a bid for best practice over composing classical music through a digital network, and will include a series of online seminars and films.

It is anticipated that over the next ten years the centre of excellence will support composers at the beginning of their careers, help those in teaching and also encourage those young composers still at school.

He has revealed plans to link with music education body Trinity College London over the next 10 years. The aim will be to nurture the careers of fledgling composers and their teachers.
