As of January 1st 2011 the MCPS membership framework will be changing. As part of this, new commission rates for independent writers will increase from 12.5% to 20%

The BBC Trust has rejected the BBC’s plans to close the digital radio station 6 Music.
In his initial response to the BBC strategy review, BBC Trust chairman Sir Michael Lyons said that the case for the closure of 6 Music had not been made.
He said the trust – which represents the interests of licence fee payers – would consider closing 6 Music only as part of a wider strategy on the future of digital radio.
A commitment to reduce rates for small venues and mixed arts festivals
PRS for Music has announced the start of a formal customer consultation on its royalty rates for popular music events in the UK. The rate – currently set at 3% of ticket receipts – was last reviewed in 1988. This is one of the lowest rates in the world with charges of up to 10% being applied in other European countries.

We held a members meeting at goNORTH in Inverness on Friday 11th of June. SMIA directors Tam Coyle, Adam Armit, Stewart Henderson and Stephen Hume and our administrator Caroline Cooper spoke about how the SMIA has developed in recent months and our plans for the future.
This year’s goNORTH will take place in Inverness on the 11th and 12th of June.
SMIA will be holding a members only event at 11.30am on Friday11th. Venue details TBC.
On Thursday 8th of April Born to Be Wide presented Wide Days, an informative music industry networking event.
Amb:IT:ion Scotland is a Scottish Arts Council funded initiative to improve skills and knowledge of social media to help creative industries in business development.
To promote the organisation, and encourage participation, Amb:IT:ion Scotland is running a series of roadshow workshops around the country.
The next event will take place at the University of Abertay, Dundee on the 6th May and will feaure a seminar by SMIA board member Dougal Perman.

UK Music are conducting research on loan applications within the music industry. They have asked us to encourage our membership to contact them with your personal experience of trying to secure a loan for your business. Please see letter below from UK Music CEO Feargal Sharkey.
UK Music has today launched an online industry-wide skills audit in a bid to identify potential skills gaps across the commercial music sector. SMIA have been asked to encourage our members to post the survey details and/or a link up onto your websites or blogs urging your members or clients to take 10 minutes to fill in the survey; the survey will run until end of June.
