Facilitating Music Tourism For Scotland’s Creative Economy

AHRC Creative Economy Engagement Fellowship Report by Dr Matthew Ord and Dr Adam Behr

The SMIA was delighted to contribute to a valuable research project by Dr Matthew Ord and Dr Adam Behr from the University of Newcastle. The report was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). It investigates what is needed to leverage the significant opportunity presented to the Scottish economy by music tourism, and complements the Growing The Value For Music Tourism In Scotland report by Inner Ear to which the SMIA also contributed.

Here is an extract from the Executive Summary. You can read the report, and download it, below.

This report presents the findings of qualitative research carried out between February and September2018 as part of an AHRC Creative Economy Engagement Fellowship at Newcastle University. The project was supported by the Scottish Music Industry Association and Music Tourist who shared their contacts and expertise, offered advice on selecting potential interviewees and assisted with the design and distribution of an online questionnaire. The principal aims of the research were:

  • To identify potential beneficiaries of music tourism in Scotland
  • To identify barriers to and opportunities for collaboration between the music, retail, hospitality and other tourism sectors
  • To better understand the role played by the various actors involved in music tourism and the challenges facing them
  • To produce a set of recommendations aimed at helping representatives of these sectors and policymakers to facilitate the development of music tourism in Scotland
