Organisers have confirmed that goNORTH 2011 will take place across the 9th and 10th of June next year in Inverness. goNorth celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2010 with its most ambitious and successful event to date, bringing a host of world-class panels, workshops and a global marathon of live showcases to the north of Scotland. goNorth has grown to become Scotland’s premier music industry event, and now offers a much wider range of activity across creative industries, from screen and broadcast to designer fashion. Over the years, the event has featured keynote speakers such as Alan McGee, Jazz Summers and Anthony Wilson.

“goNORTH has become firmly established in terms of the industry calendar and last year’s event was incredible. In 2011, we are looking forward to not only maintaining the standard people have grown to expect from goNORTH, but building on it”, said director Shaun Arnold. “We are working hard to continue developing new ideas and encourage input from a broader range of creative industries. The event is such an important platform, and we pride ourselves on generating a dynamic and vibrant environment where people across all levels of experience can get together, make connections, watch some of the most exciting new bands around, and most importantly, have a really great time.”

Organisers have also confirmed that they are working hard to introduce some exciting changes to next year’s event, and are due to announce further details across the coming months.

Interactive Scotland, Inner Ear and the Scottish Music Industry Association present a new music and media convention. Music Business Innovation takes place on Thursday 18 November, The Hub, Pacific Quay, Glasgow.

The music industry has changed drastically in the past decade and continues to transform every single day. There is no avoiding the fact that the industry, as a whole, is in a state of flux. With new technologies offering new routes to markets and fan bases, how can the music industry evolve in order to survive and continue to be financially viable?

This event will discuss and debate how labels, publishers, managers, the media, brands and artists themselves can utilise new online platforms and internet models as well as social media, digital marketing agencies, branded content and online retailers. Music Business Innovation will also explore new ways and methods in which they can work together and develop to ensure that money can be made from one of the most important and ubiquitous creative artforms and cultural exports.

We will evaluate the opportunities and challenges made by new technologies through a series of sector specific round-table discussions and workshops, which will be followed by presentations on different aspects of the modern music industry, followed by an open panel industry debate elaborating on and discussing the issues raised from the prior conversations and presentations.

This event will bring together some of the leading industry speakers including some of the most respected UK independent record labels, PRS For Music, We7, Mixcloud, Radio Magnetic, Frukt and many more to evaluate the opportunities for the music sector going forward. Prior to the keynote speeches and panel discussion, Music Business Innovation will facilitate industry specific round table discussions followed by three specialised workshop training sessions.

PRS for Music, the UK’s royalty collection agency for writers, composers and music publishers, is running an event in conjunction with the Scottish Music Industry Association on Thursday 23rd September at 6pm in Studio 1 at Glasgow City Halls, Candleriggs, Glasgow, which will be aimed at demystifying online music licensing.

Things are moving so fast in the online World, it’s difficult to keep track of where the income streams are flowing……are you earning what you should from downloads? Is streaming a viable business model, or just to be viewed as a promotional tool? Who do I need to deal with if I’m releasing music on the internet? What are ‘premium’ downloads, and why do they earn more than ‘normal’ ones? Will I make money by having my music on social networking sites? These are just a few of the issues concerning labels, writers, artists, publishers and anyone else involved in making or producing music in the 21st Century. Licensing agreements change on a regular basis, as does the legislation they are based on.

Guest speaker is Nick Edwards, PRS for Music’s Broadcast & Online Manager, who will give an update on recent developments in online and broadcast licensing, and answer any questions you may have.
To register for this event please contact Caroline Cooper (SMIA) by email on caroline@smia.org.uk or by telephone 0141 553 2784. Places are limited for this free event so please register your attendance as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
